ST. MARY’S WINS RIVERDALE BAPTIST TOURNAMENT

SAINTS DEFEAT GILMAN, 8-1, IN THE FINAL


St. Mary’s had a big day on Saturday, overcoming bitter cold and two quality opponents to win a pair of games and a championship at the Riverdale Baptist Baseball Tournament, in Upper Marlboro.
The Saints opened with an 8-4 win over St. Michael’s of the Eastern Shore and then defeated MIAA A Conference rival Gilman, 8-1. Earlier in the day Gilman knocked off tournament host and nationally ranked Riverdale Baptist, 5-2.

In the final against Gilman Chase Hilliard had two hits, including a double, drove in three runs and scored one to lead the offense. The Saints took control with a five-run bottom of the second.

Nick Quinn added a pair of doubles and a run scored, Brandon Cook had a double among his two hits, with two runs scored and two RBI, Stephen Pelli was 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored and Miles Christian had two hits and an RBI.

Five St. Mary’s pitchers combined to pitch seven innings of two hit ball.

In the earlier game, Hilliard and Christian each had a pair of hits and Hopkins walked twice and scored three runs without benefit of a base hit.
