Cape Henry hires new boys lacrosse coach

Joe Thompson, who played on a Final Four team at the University of Virginia, has been named Cape Henry Collegiate’s boys lacrosse coach.

Thompson replaces Charlie Lonergan, who won more than 100 games over 10 seasons.

Thompson played at St. Mary’s High in Annapolis, Md., before heading to U.Va. He was a team captain when the Cavaliers made the Final Four in 2005 and received the team’s Thomas C. Rixey award for spirit and inspiration.
Thompson was a U.Va. assistant and was a head coach at Sacred Heart Prep in Atherton, Calif., and his alma mater before serving the past two seasons as offensive coordinator at Maryland power Loyola Blakefield.

"I am thrilled to be moving to Virginia and leading the lacrosse program at Cape Henry Collegiate,” Thompson said in a release from the school. “I cannot wait to meet the players and their families, along with other coaches, faculty, and students. The hard work Coach Charlie Lonergan and his staff have put in the past 10 years is evident through the growth of the sport in Hampton Roads area; and, the success CHC has experienced during his tenure. My goal is to further build on this strong foundation and help take the Dolphins to the next level."

Athletic director Jeanne Short said Lonergan resigned to move closer to family in Amherst. Mass.
"We will miss his results, but more importantly, his mentoring and positive impact on our student-athletes," Short wrote in an email.
