Latin Teacher Receives Award

St. Mary’s Latin teacher, Dr. Christine Kalkavage, was awarded the 2015 Teaching Excellence Award from the Archdiocese of Baltimore by Archbishop Lori. Fewer than ten teachers in the Archdiocese of Baltimore will be honored with this distinction.
Dr. Kalkavage is a teacher committed to connecting with students and gifted in her ability to do so.  She teaches all levels of Latin (from I to V) with a combination of passion and precision, rigor and kindness. Daily she can be seen explaining, coaxing, praising, engaging. This work is carried out with quiet  joy. Dr. Kalkavage’s simultaneously caring and demanding style of molding Latin scholars wins the unflagging devotion of her students. Her love of Latin and Greek and everything to do with ancient Rome parallels a deep love of her Catholic faith. She is a consummate teacher and a woman of prayer.  She also brings high spirits to learning—a razor wit and love of fun complimenting a devotion to fairness and mutual respect. Dr. Kalkavage’s students routinely excel on the National Latin Exam. More importantly they understand that her work has been an act of love.
