St. Mary's Elementary School Students Serve those in need at the Light House

During the course of this school year St. Mary's Elementary School 8th grade students each have an opportunity to serve at the Light House. They pack grocery bags that are provided to men and women in need, stock pantry shelves, prepare bag lunches for distribution and serve hot lunches to anyone in need. The enthusiasm of these students is evident and contagious.
Student comments indicate that they have enjoyed the experience and have been very affected by these volunteer opportunities. A few of their thoughts are below:
"It was an eye opening experience. People who can't afford food know they have a place to go"

"I knew I was helping others while having fun...I would love to go back."

"I was thinking it was a way to get out of school but by the end I realized how much fun it was. It felt good to be helping others."

"Working at the Light House shelter was very special. I got to experience something that most people don't know. It taught me not to take my home and other things for granted."

"I really enjoyed helping the homeless and interacting with them. I loved making a difference in my community. I enjoy knowing where the lunches that my family and I make go."

"I loved getting to serve my community by helping to serve lunch and pack food bags. It was so interesting to see how our donations help others get through the month. This experience will stick with me for a long time."

"I loved how it made me feel knowing I was helping others. I would love to volunteer again."
