St. Mary’s Students Recognized as Archdiocese of Baltimore Catholic School Distinctive Scholars
Three St. Mary’s High School seniors, Luke Bonfiglio, Eden Fales and Mia Haschert, have received the honor of Archdiocese of Baltimore Catholic School Distinctive Scholar. The Distinctive Scholars program affirms and celebrates the academic talents of students in the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s secondary schools. Twenty-four years ago, the Department of Catholic Schools initiated the tradition of having a yearly convocation whereby the top academic students would gather as one to receive their rightful recognition of their academic achievements accomplished over the four years of their high school careers.
While students and their families could not gather at the convocation as usual this year, Luke, Eden and Mia join the top three students from each of the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s Catholic high schools in being recognized and honored for their accomplishments.
Luke Bonfiglio is a young man with exceptional intellectual promise and the intrinsic desire to learn. He has the mind of a mathematician with his exceptional capacity for critical thinking and advanced mathematical and logical reasoning, and he subsequently became one of only a few juniors in St. Mary’s AP Calculus BC class. Luke is driven by his desire to fully understand and master academic concepts and to persevere when things are challenging. He is a young man of tremendous character and maturity who garners the respect and admiration of everyone he encounters through his commitment to all of his endeavors. His integrity, perseverance and academic excellence speak to the values with which he was raised and the values with which he wholeheartedly serves the world around him.
Eden Fales is a brilliant and imaginative young woman who has continually demonstrated her capacity for advanced mathematical thinking and abstract reasoning that sets her apart from her peers. As a junior in AP Calculus BC, she quickly became a leader among her peers as the other students in the class recognized and respected her strong grasp of the material and her ability to guide others in their journey toward mastery of the concepts. Eden’s motivation and exemplary academic habits illustrate her maturity, her conscientious nature and her willingness to work hard to achieve her goals.
Mia Haschert is an exemplary scholar, an accomplished athlete and a noble servant leader. She is a truly exceptional, imaginative student who possesses wisdom beyond her years and is driven by her inherent desire to learn and grow. The way she carries herself is a testament to her modesty: she is a brilliant and talented young woman, but she is never arrogant; she is always eager to serve others and to improve the world around her. The St. Mary’s High School Mathematics Department selected Mia as the recipient of the 2019 Phyllis McWilliams Award for Innovation in Mathematics, which is awarded annually to a student in the junior class who has demonstrated advanced problem-solving abilities and a passion for mathematics. Mia is a perfect combination of intellect, humility, maturity, and determination, and she is a shining example to others in her dedication to both excellence and service.
Congratulations to Luke, Eden and Mia for this incredibly deserved honor!
