After a thoughtful period of prayer, consultation, and input from parishioners, St. Mary's Parish has officially named its newly acquired Bestgate Road property the Saint Joseph Center.
The announcement was made by Father Woods, who reflected on the significance of naming places and people, noting that names carry meaning, identity, and purpose.
"One of the great blessings that parents have...is the great honor of naming their son or daughter," Father Woods shared. "Well, the time has come to name our new property on Bestgate Road."
The naming process included conversations with parish staff, suggestions from parishioners, and careful consideration of several meaningful options. Among the finalists were Saint Alphonsus Center, honoring the founder of the Redemptorists; Holy Redeemer Center, reflecting the official title of the Redemptorist congregation; and Saint Joseph Center.
Ultimately, Father Woods chose Saint Joseph Center, recognizing Saint Joseph as a model of humility, faithfulness, courage, and quiet leadership.
Father Woods shared the thought that St. Joseph is a great model for all of us, but especially for fathers and grandfathers Father Woods shared. We can be certain that our Blessed Mother will be happy with this choice.
Throughout his reflection, Father Woods highlighted Saint Joseph's unique role in salvation history. As the earthly father of Jesus and husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph faithfully protected and provided for the Holy Family, trusting God's plan even amid uncertainty. His life of humble service continues to inspire Catholics around the world, and he is honored as the patron saint of workers, fathers, and a peaceful death.
While the property now has a name, its future purpose is still being carefully discerned. Parish leadership has explored several possibilities for how the Saint Joseph Center can best serve the mission of St. Mary's Parish and School. Among its many opportunities, the property's existing gymnasium and athletic fields will allow St. Mary's to expand its athletic facilities, providing additional space for practices, competitions, and student activities while supporting the continued growth of Saints athletics. Leaders are taking a thoughtful and prayerful approach as they determine the best overall use of the campus.
"We have spent plenty of energy discussing and analyzing how we might use the Saint Joseph Center," Father Woods explained. "We are being cautious in selecting the best use of the Center."
Father Woods concluded his announcement by inviting the parish community to join him in praying for wisdom and guidance as plans continue to develop.
"Rather than following old customs or superstitions," he said, "pray to Saint Joseph, asking that he guide us in how best to use this place we have named in his honor."
As St. Mary's begins this exciting new chapter, the Saint Joseph Center represents more than a new name - it reflects a continued investment in the future of the parish and school. From expanding opportunities for students through enhanced athletic facilities to creating new possibilities for ministry and community engagement, the Saint Joseph Center will serve as a place where faith, fellowship, and formation continue to flourish for generations to come.
Saint Joseph, pray for us.
