Sacraments of Initiation

Eucharist

Eucharist (or Communion) is one of our sacraments of initiation. Eucharist refers to Christ’s body and blood, truly present in the consecrated host and wine (now called the Body and Blood of Christ). The Eucharist is the source and summit of our faith through the actions of the Holy Spirit and the Real Presence of Jesus; His Body and Blood become present under the form of bread and wine. It is through the Eucharist that each of us are nourished by Jesus to seek God’s Will.
If your child is in second grade or older and you want them to receive communion, please contact the Office of Faith Formation. We want to continue to assist you in raising your child in the faith. Below are some of the basic requirements to have your child receive First Holy Communion:
At a minimum your child must:
  • Be baptized in the Catholic Church or another Christian denomination recognized by the Catholic Church. They must have been baptized with water and “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
  • Have received at least one year of religious education instruction.
  • Have received the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Instruction for this sacrament takes place at the same time as instruction for First Holy Communion.
For more information and to register your child for the sacraments of Reconciliation (Confession) and Eucharist (Communion), please visit the Sacraments for Children and Youth webpage.

Children who have not been baptized or where baptized under another Christian tradition are prepared under the guidelines of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults adapted for children
