St. Mary's passes stress test against Severna Park, 11-10

Whitney Albert and Savvy Smith played a large role in helping the St. Mary’s girls lacrosse team lead Severna Park for most of the game on Monday.
Once the Falcons fought back to tie the game late, Albert and Smith came through again.
Albert’s goal with 5 minutes, 17 seconds broke the tie, while Smith made a pair of key saves in the final minutes and helped the Saints hang on for the 11-10 victory.
Albert finished with three goals and also secured a ground ball with 1:30 left that helped the Saints run out the clock for their second straight win.
“It was stressful. We started not getting many of the draws, and that’s when they came back,” Albert said. “We finished well and it shows that we can beat a good team.”

Smith finished with eight saves, including one in the final minutes on a play where she turned the ball over and was forced to scramble to make a save to preserve the one-goal lead.

“This was a pretty big game. I live around here and I have friends who go here (Severna Park), so I really wanted to win,” Smith said. “They are a great public-school team and I feel like that’s what we need in our non-conference games, the great competition. It was a great win.”
