Semi-Finalist for the 2018 Anne Arundel County Independent School Teacher of the Year Walter "Jamie" Schlie, Jr.

St. Mary’s is excited to announce that for the third year in a row we are being recognized for our dynamic teachers.  Jamie Schlie is a Semi-Finalist for the 2018 Anne Arundel County Independent School Teacher of the Year.
Throughout the process of creating our new St. Isidore Cyber Program, Mr. Schlie has played an integral part in defining what this generation needs to learn as it relates to cyber, literacy, and Science. Mr. Schlie’s ability to stay calm and confident models the essential behaviors needed for true Science experiences.  Mr. Schlie encourages students to inquire about why they are learning and, therefore, students are engaged in the most personal way.

Teacher Jamie Schlie stated, "Teaching is a humbling profession with new challenges every day.  The teachers at St. Mary’s High School work tirelessly for the academic success of all our students.  I am honored to represent them and St. Mary’s High School as a semi-finalist for teacher of the year.”  When asked what motivates him in teaching, he states, “There are many things that motivate me to teach, but the most important are the students.  Chemistry does not come easily to many students, so their small and big successes in the classroom and especially the “aha” moments are particularly gratifying.

Principal Mindi Imes stated, “Jamie is an exceptional teacher because he cares about his students and he is one the most cutting edge professionals in the building who has been encouraging STEM before it became a common acronym. Jamie teaches students critical thinking skills in the disciplines of Chemistry, Physics and Cyber Science and his leadership spills over into guiding students to build rockets and aquatic devices for competition through our Robotics and Engineering Club.

Mr. Schlie has been teaching 29 years, 18 of them at St. Mary’ High School.  He currently teaches:
Chemistry, Honors Chemistry, AP Chemistry, Honors Cyber Science.  Honors Cyber Science is a cyber-based STEM class that is part of the St. Isidore Cyber Program.  He is the Science Department Chair and co-moderator of the STEM Club.
