14th Annual Patriot Games Classic

Kathy Norwood and Matt Martelli returned to GMU for the 14th Annual Patriot Games Classic, along with six high-school performers and two of our USNA coaches.
The Patriot Games Classic is one of the East Coast's largest high-school forensics (speech and debate) competitions, and this year's competitors--nearly 3000 in all!--came from as far-flung places as Texas, Tennessee, and Florida.

We had six total competitors, none progressed to the next round, but each did very well and made us proud.  Three of the six were competing for their very first time!  They will receive judges’ ballots this coming week to provide feedback and suggestions for improvement.

The following students competed on Saturday:
  • Olivia Beach, ‘20 — Student Congress (3-minute extemporized speeches on student-sponsored “legislation”)
  • Andy Cawood, ‘19 — Original Oratory (10-minute memorized original speech)
  • Hudson Christensen, ‘21 — Impromptu (5-minute extemporized speech)
  • Marcus Coleman, ‘21 — Impromptu
  • Ali Hegarty, ‘18 — Original Oratory
  • Nick Obert, ‘20 — Student Congress

Many thanks for your support of our student performers.  They compete next on Saturday, December 16 in the Baltimore Catholic Forensics League.
