What does Easter and Spring Break mean to you?

Traditionally, Spring Break is a U.S. phenomenon and an academic tradition, which started during the 1930’s in the United States and is observed in some other western countries.
Spring break is also a vacation period in early spring at universities and schools in various countries in the world, where it is known by names such as Easter vacation, Easter Holiday, March break, spring vacation, Mid-Term Break, study week, reading week, reading period, or Easter week, depending on regional conventions. However, these vacations differ from Spring Break in the United States.

Here at St. Mary’s we celebrate Easter and Spring Break every year around the Easter Holiday.   Easter is the celebration of Christ's resurrection from the dead. It is celebrated on Sunday, and marks the end of Holy Week, the end of Lent, the last day of the Easter Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday), and is the beginning of the Easter season of the liturgical yearEaster does not have a fixed date, like Christmas, because the 15th of Nisan of the Semitic calendar was shifting from date to date on the Julian calendar.

Many of our families choose this dedicated time-off to spend quality time with their loved ones and celebrate the time together.  It has become a yearly tradition to focus this time on each other, our communities and the greater good of all.  Some search for warmer weather and head to the beach, amusement parks, cruises, or some just stay local and explore what is around us.  Many are also tied to sports commitments, and will spend their time from field to field and with any luck getting some sunshine in the process.

Our President of the School states, One of the greatest blessings of working in a school like St. Mary's is the link between our daily life and our faith.  I am reminded of this often, but particularly around the holidays; Easter break is upon us!  There are so few of us that have the opportunity to really stop, take a break, and truly reflect on the impact of Easter.  Taking a break from school to be with family, and be renewed during this season is a wonderful gift.  Though I know that some will also use some time to visit the slopes or the beach, at the same time I hope we all take the time to be renewed and reborn in this Easter season. We should recognize that our daily life and faith can reinforce each other in subtle and grand ways.  I wish all of us the gift of renewal and reflection during our time away from school, and look forward to returning with a renewed sense of our purpose!  Happy Easter.”

Wherever you end up this break, we hope that you use this time to reflect on the positive and have some renewed energy to head into summer.  We have great things happening here at St. Mary’s and are grateful everyday of committed families and individuals that continue to make our Parish thrive.    “He has made everything beautiful in its time”.
