Students give hope with inspirational journals

The high school students of St. Mary’s are creating journals to be used for therapy with women who are victims of violence, domestic abuse, and human trafficking.
The journals will be donated to TurnAround, Inc., an organization in Baltimore that works to build a community free of violence by addressing the needs of the victims of abuse, by advocacy, and by education.  Our High School Librarian, Suzanne Blackburn says, "For almost 40 years, TurnAround, Inc. has been providing counseling and support services to victims of sexual and domestic violence.  We at St. Mary's are happy for the opportunity to show our support for TurnAround, and for those whom they serve."  We hope that this project will send a message of hope to these women, and give our students the opportunity to exercise empathy and concern for those in crisis.  “We see this project as a reflection of Catholic social teaching”, said Bethany Love, Art Department Chair, who is supervising this art project and is charge of the Human Trafficking Task Force Club.

About TurnAround Inc.
It opened its doors in 1978 as the Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Center (SADVC) with the mission of providing counseling and support services to victims of sexual assault and domestic violence in Baltimore County. Our Baltimore City office opened in January 1995 to fill a gap in services for sexual assault victims and expanded to serve victims of domestic violence as well. The agency's name was changed to Second Step, Inc. in 1998 as we celebrated 20 years of service to the community. In celebration of the new millennium, we became TurnAround, Inc., the first place to turn. Our mission has always been the same: to provide counseling and support services to victims of rape, incest and domestic violence and to increase community awareness and understanding of these problems.   TurnAround is a private, nonprofit agency that is funded in part by a Victims of Crime Act Grant, the Governor's Office of Crime Control and Prevention, and State of Maryland Department of Human Resources. TurnAround is registered with the Maryland Secretary of State as a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit agency.
