SMHS Legendary Basketball Coach Passes Away

St. Mary’s High School Girls Basketball is mourning the loss of one of its own. Coach Harry Dobson, who coached the Saints from 1988 to 2008 passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2022. Coach Dobson is the winningest basketball coach in SMHS history and was inducted into our Hall of Fame in 2006.

Coach Dobson began his career at St. Mary’s as the Girls JV Head coach and in his second year, the JV Team went undefeated. He would eventually become the Varsity Head Coach. In that role, he was named Coach of the Year multiple times, had two undefeated seasons in 1996 & 1998, and in 1997 his team ranked number one in the Baltimore Metro Area.

A year after Coach Dobson retired he was invited back to St. Mary’s and honored by the school and former player and then current coach Terri Daniels ’99. “Out of all the coaches I’ve had through the years, I can look back and honestly say Coach Dobson cared for me the most. He wanted what’s best for me in all aspects of life.”

Most recently, back in November, Coach Dobson returned to the St. Mary’s basketball court to coach a group of alums who were taking on the Girls Varsity Basketball team. Coach Dobson was visibly excited to be back on campus and while alums were happy to reconnect, current players were just as excited to meet a part of SMHS history! Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
