St. Mary's HS Nominates Social Studies Teacher Kaitlyn Marsh for 2018-2019 Archdiocesan Teacher of the Year
In addition to teaching Social Studies, Kaitlyn Marsh chaperones our Kairos Retreat, plans field trips, serves as the Head Field Hockey Coach which won the championship this past fall, moderates the Hope for Healing Club, and participates in our Bibles and Bagels Club. Kaitlyn is a servant leader who teaches with excellence and leads in a variety of aspects of our school.
In Kaitlyn's words:
Having taught for five years at St. Mary's High School, I firmly believe that God called me to this place.
On my first day in August, the day began with mass, followed by a faculty meeting. In said meeting, Mrs. Imes began by asking the staff--why do you teach at St. Mary's High School and why have you chosen to teach in a Catholic school? My initial thought, albeit a little sassy, was "well, technically I have yet to teach a class yet." However, I also remember struggling to answer this question because I had yet to interact with students. Moments prior, I had met all of my new colleagues and received my courses' textbooks. Although God called me to this place for my first year of teaching, I did not yet understand the plans he had for me. When asked to reflect on these same two questions in my fifth year of teaching, the answer is more transparent. St. Mary's has become a home for me; I am fully invested in developing my students academically, socially, and most importantly, spiritually.
Just as I began my journey at St. Mary's in Mass, rooted in Jesus Christ, each school day I find myself seeking Christ--whether that it is mentoring a students' faith journey, praying with students, meditating in the adoration chapel, or simply modeling Christ's love to my students and colleagues.
Over these past 5 years, working in a Catholic school has allowed me to serve the community in a multitude of ways. As a social studies teacher in a Catholic school I have the unique opportunity to create mission and service driven lesson plans that specifically address social justice issues. In addition, I have had a plethora of opportunities such as coaching JV & Varsity field hockey, attending over-night retreats such as Kairos, and engaging in service projects through campus ministry and clubs such as Hope for Healing. To me, working in a Catholic school has allowed me to truly aid the development of each student as an individual. God called me to teach in a Catholic school so that I can mentor students in their faith journey, by sharing my own faith journey.
St. Mary's has enriched my life in ways that are hard to put into words. I know that God's will for me is to teach, mentor, coach, and support my students at St. Mary's High School. Teaching in a Catholic school is not so much a choice--I know it is God's will for me and for that, I am truly grateful.
