St. Mary's Terrapin Rescue Project
Our 5th and 6th grade students are participating in an environmental service
project, spearheaded by their science teacher, Mrs. Sandy Gateau. They
are helping to save our state reptile from major population decreases that
could be devastating to the state terrapin population. In their science
class, the students are studying the three terrapins that they are raising
and what they can do to help them until their release on May 13th, Maryland
Terrapin Day.
One way to help terrapins is to purchase them from the fisheries before
they are shipped to buyers and used for food. Another way is to purchase
terrapins to be tagged by the Department of Natural Resources and released
in an area where there are no fishing nets to catch the terrapins. In order
to raise money for this project, the students are holding a "Wear Green"
day. All students who contribute $1.00, may come out of uniform. All proceeds
will go towards their Terrapin Resuce Project.
